Gunman robs Clifton theater, manager
CLIFTON- A robber armed with a revolver stole more than $3000 from a Market Street movie theater Thursday afternoon, police said.
The 29-year-old manager of Clearview Allwood Cinema at 96 Market St. told police that a man wearing a hooded jacket that obscured his face broke into the movie theater while the manger, whom police did not identify, was preparing the theater for evening shows.
The robber first asked the manager when the next movie was playing, then asked if the theater was hiring, Detective Capt. Robert Rowan said.
"The manager went in the office to get a job application and when he turned around the suspect displayed a black revolver," he said.
The man ordered the manager tot he ground while he attempted to open a safe in the office, Rowan said, asking the manager to open it for him after several unsuccessful attempts.
The robber stuffed more than $3000 in cash into the manager's backpack, which he took with him as he fled the theater, Rowan said. The robber tied the manager's hands and legs together using a cord from the movie theater office.
He also stole $150 from the manager's wallet. "That's really bad," Rowan said. "You're already getting $3000. Don't take the poor guy's money."
The manager said the man, possibly white, was about 5-foot-8, approximately 160 pounds, and was wearing a blue-green hooded jacket.
