AU Basketball, about a week late: Unless you live in a cave, or don't care about the AU basketball program (hint: the latter is much more likely), you know that AU swept the Monday games! First the women beat UMES (Maryland-Eastern Shore), 62-61 on a last-minute surge and two missed free throws by UMES in the last 5 seconds. Then the men squeaked out a victory over Howard 61-58, having lost a larger lead in the last few minutes, and when Matej "Vlade Jr." Cresnik missed two free throws that would have sealed the game, the AU defense had to step up, denying a Howard 3-pointer as the clock hit 0:00.
Let's now look at the remaining non-conference schedule for the Eagles, 7 games until the 11th of January, the Patriot League Opener at Bucknell. 12/20 at College of Charleston. Um, no. I don't care if CoC lost to Central Florida Thursday. They've also beaten Wyoming, Oklahoma State, and Villanova to win the Great Alaska Shootout. Charleston, but not by much. 12/22 at Fairfield. Played St. John's and Harvard tough. Killed by DePaul. Beat NC-Wilmington, Iona, and Marist. I'm gonna give this one to AU in a squeaker. 11/28 vs. Elon. I don't know about Elon. They don't seem that tough, but I'd like to see what they do against NC-Greensboro on the 15th (a common opponent, AU lost 80-79 in OT). Giving it to AU for now. 12/30 at Wagner. Wagner lost to NC-Greensboro by 19, and UConn by 12. That's odd. But the first stat leaves me willing to predict an AU win. 1/2 vs. George Washington. 3 losses, all to ranked teams. Bucknell played them within three points, which is hopeful, but not enough for me. GW by 10. 1/4 vs. St. Francis (PA). I can't even figure out what conference they're in (it's the NEC). Beat Howard by 2, lost to Bucknell by 3. I'm going to say win, but I'm not confident after looking at that common opponent stuff. 1/8 at Penn. Sandwich game for them between at Colorado and at USC. Letdown? I'd be thrilled if the answer was yes, but I'll say no. Penn by 5.
Final verdict: Non-conference record 7-6. Good shape going into conference play.
