Josh's Movie Review: American Wedding: I'm about to eat some crow. When I first heard this movie was being made back in January, I was sure it was going to suck. That couldn't have been helped by the fact that they dumped Oz, Heather, Jessica, and Vicky (Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Natasha Lyonne, and Tara Reid), in favor of, probably, more Stifler (Seann William Scott). All of these things happened. And yet, while not hitting the perfect pinnacle of American Pie the first, American Wedding is still an awesome movie, 10 to 20 times better than AP2.
Why? Firstly, because of the reduced number of characters, there's no need for annoying, unimportant subplots, like the Oz/Heather phone sex plot, and the Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas, who really didn't need to be in AP3 either, but didn't ruin it)/Vicky "sex at college" plot. It's very focused around two things, Jim and Michelle's wedding, which involves many major pitfalls (would you expect anthing else?) including the proposal scene at the beginning of the movie which really sets the tone. The other is the Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas)/Stifler fight over Michelle's sister, Cadence (January Jones), which leads to some hilarious character development for both of them. Even the goofy gags, including a trip to a gay bar and the "show female boob" scene (Nadia in AP1, "lesbians" in AP2), both work out hilarously, and advance the plot (no filler here).
In essence, the movie only works because moviegoers know these characters and what to expect from them. And it still works. Hilariously, and at the same time, very sweetly. Even for Stifler. So if you liked the first two, go see it. If not, it may not be for you, but then again, did you need to read this review to know that?
